Coin in bronze struck at Attaea in Mysia under Lucius Verus, dated AD 161–169. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 19591 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Bare head of Lucius Verus, right. Legend: [..]ΑΙ Μ ΑΥ ΡΗ ΟV[..]. Reverse: Male figure (Heros?) and Zeus; to left nude male figure (Heros?) standing right, left foot on cippus (altar?); to right Zeus, standing facing, head left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, at his feet eagle, standing right; between them, child, standing facing. Legend: ΕΠΙ ΡΟVΦΟV ΑΡΧ ΑΤΤΑΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 14.63 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 29 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Lucius Verus was Roman emperor from 161 until his death in 169, reigning alongside his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Their joint succession marked the first time the Roman Empire was ruled by more than one emperor simultaneously. The majority of his reign was occupied by directing war with Parthia, which concluded in Roman victory, followed by his initial involvement in the Marcomannic Wars before he fell ill and died in 169. This civic coinage was struck at Attaea in Mysia during the shared imperial period.
