Historical context
This coin was issued by the city of Pitane in Mysia during the Roman Imperial Period, dated to c. AD 161–165. Pitane was an ancient Greek town situated in the region of Aeolis in Asia Minor, near modern Çandarlı in Asiatic Turkey. Located near the mouth of the river Evenus on the bay of Elaea, it possessed considerable commercial advantages thanks to its two harbours.
