Coin in bronze struck at Hadrianeia in Mysia under Caracalla, dated c. AD 214–217. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 19791 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of bearded Caracalla, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟϹ ΑVΓΟVϹΤΟϹ. Reverse: River-god and Hermes; to left, river-god reclined, r., under a tree, holding reed and resting r. arm on vase from which water flows; to right, Hermes standing facing, looking l., holding purse, caduceus and chlamys, at his feet, ram standing, l. Legend: [.. ΚΑ]ΠΙΤΩΝΟϹ [..] ΑΔΡΙΑΝΕΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 32.1 g (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later taking the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. He became sole ruler of the Roman Empire after having his brother Geta murdered in 211 AD. This civic bronze issue was struck under his reign, c. AD 214–217, at Hadrianeia, an ancient town located in the northwest Asia Minor region of Mysia.
