Historical context

Atarneus, an ancient Greek city located in the region of Aeolis in Asia Minor on the mainland opposite Lesbos, flourished during the 4th century BCE. Situated within the broader region of Mysia along the route from Adramyttium to the Caicus plain, it served as an issuing authority in the Classical Period, producing civic bronze coinage around 350 BC during the era when Hermias of Atarneus governed the territory.
