Historical context

This bronze coin was issued by the ancient Greek city of Atarneus during the Classical Period. Located in the Aeolis region of Asia Minor across from Lesbos, the city lay on the route connecting Adramyttium to the plain of the Caicus. In the 4th century BCE, the era of this coin's production, Atarneus flourished as the seat of government under Hermias of Atarneus, a friend of Aristotle.
