Historical context

This Classical Period coin was struck between c. 400 and 300 BC by the city authority of Perperene in Mysia. Located south-east of Adramyttium in western Anatolia, Perperene was an Aeolian colony, also recorded under names such as Parparon, Perperena, and later Theodosiopolis. The surrounding area was known for its copper mines as well as its good vineyards, reflected in the coin's vine imagery.
