Historical context

This bronze coin was struck at Pitane in Mysia during the Roman Imperial Period between AD 193 and 211. Pitane was an ancient settlement of Aeolis in Asia Minor, situated near the mouth of the river Evenus on the bay of Elaea. It issued this civic coinage under Septimius Severus, Roman emperor from 193 to 211, who had taken power after the death of Pertinax.
