Historical context

Hadrianotherae was a town in ancient Mysia, founded by the Roman emperor Hadrian to mark a successful hunt in the district, and it minted coinage from his reign onward. This bronze piece was struck by the city between AD 193 and 211 under Julia Domna. Domna, who hailed from Emesa, became Roman empress in 193 following the accession of her husband, Septimius Severus, representing the first empress of the Severan dynasty.
