Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo, left. Reverse: Forepart of prancing horse, right. Historical context

Atarneus was an ancient Greek city located in Asia Minor, on the mainland opposite the island of Lesbos along the road from Adramyttium to the Caicus plain. Its territory, called Atarneitis, was known as fertile corn country. Following a 4th-century BCE flourishment under Hermias of Atarneus, the civic community continued striking bronze coins in the Hellenistic period during the 3rd century BC, before being deserted by its inhabitants in the 1st century BCE.
