Historical context
This bronze coin was struck in Cyzicus, an ancient Greek town situated in Mysia on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara in northwestern Anatolia. It was issued under the Roman emperor Commodus, who governed as sole ruler from 180 until his assassination on 31 December 192. His sole reign marked the close of the Pax Romana and the end of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, a period characterised by rising internal tensions and civic issues across the provinces of Asia Minor.
