Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, initially sharing power with Lucius Aurelius Verus. In 145 he married Annia Galeria Faustina the Younger, daughter of Antoninus Pius, who served as empress from 161 until her death in 175 or 176 and was honoured with the title Augusta. This civic issue was struck at Parium, a Greek city located in the region of Mysia on the Hellespont.
