Historical context

Pitane was an ancient Greek town of Aeolis in Asia Minor, situated near modern Çandarlı on the bay of Elaea. As one of eleven Aeolian settlements, it benefited from two harbours. This bronze issue was struck by the city under Severus Alexander, the Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty who ruled from 222 until 235 AD, featuring a depiction of his mother, Julia Mamaea, who served as his chief advisor throughout his reign.
