Coin in bronze struck at Lampsakos in Mysia under Gallienus, dated AD 253–268. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 22725 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Gallienus, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: [..] P L GALLINEVS (sic!). Reverse: ithyphallic statue of bearded Priapus standing on base, l., holding cantharus over lighted altar with right hand and long filleted thyrsus with the left hand. Legend: ЄΠΙ ΑΤΡЄϹΙΟV ΛΑΝΨΑΚΗΝΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 4.94 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 21 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Lampsakos was an ancient Greek city located on the eastern shore of the Hellespont in the northern Troad. This civic bronze issue was struck there during the reign of Gallienus, who ruled as Roman emperor jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and then alone until September 268. His 15-year rule occurred during the tumultuous Crisis of the Third Century, which was marked by Germanic incursions, civil conflicts, and regional rebellions.
