Historical context
Magnesia on the Maeander, also known as Magnesia ad Maeandrum, was an ancient Greek city in Ionia established by Magnetes and Cretans at the earlier site of Leucophrys. In earlier centuries it had supported the Romans during the Second Mithridatic War. This civic coin was struck under the Roman emperor Nero, who reigned from AD 54 until his suicide in AD 68 as the final ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
