Historical context

Tyras was an ancient Greek city on the northern coast of the Black Sea, founded by colonists from Miletus around 600 BC near the mouth of the Tyras River. Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, taking power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. Under his imperial reign, bronze coinage was issued by the city of Tyras.
