Historical context

Caracalla, born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was a member of the Severan dynasty who served as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling as sole emperor after murdering his brother Geta in 211 AD. Tyras was an ancient Greek city on the northern coast of the Black Sea, originally founded by colonists from Miletus around 600 BC and situated near the mouth of the Tyras River. Under Roman imperial authority, the city issued bronze coinage depicting Dionysus and bearing the portrait of Caracalla.
