Historical context
Tyras was an ancient Greek settlement located on the northern shore of the Black Sea, situated approximately 10 km from the mouth of the Tyras River and founded around 600 BC by settlers from Miletus. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, commonly known as Caracalla, ruled the Roman Empire from 198 to 217 AD, initially as co-emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus and later as sole ruler following the death of his father in 211 and the murder of his brother Geta. Under his reign, provincial civic coinage was produced at Tyras.
