Historical context

Tyras was an ancient Greek city situated on the northern coast of the Black Sea, originally founded by colonists from Miletus. Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander was Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, serving as the final ruler of the Severan dynasty after succeeding his cousin Elagabalus. Civic bronze coinage was struck at Tyras during his imperial reign.
