Historical context

Pergamon was an ancient Greek city in Aeolis, situated on a promontory north of the river Caicus. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus served as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, representing the Nerva–Antonine dynasty during the end of the Pax Romana. Under his imperial reign, the city of Pergamon produced bronze coinage bearing his portrait, reflecting civic coin production within the Roman Imperial system.
