Reverse: Athena standing facing, head left, wearing long garment and helmet, holding patera in outstretched right hand and left hand resting on shield placed on ground; behind, a lance. Legend: ΑΔΡΑΜVΤΗΝΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 9.3 g (mean of 5 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 26–29 mm (from 5 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander, known as Alexander Severus, reigned as Roman emperor from 222 until his assassination in March 235 AD. Succeeded from his murdered cousin Elagabalus, he was the last emperor of the Severan dynasty. During his rule, provincial coinage was issued across the empire, including at Adramyttion (also known as Adramyttium), an ancient city situated in the region of Mysia in modern-day Turkey.
