Coin in bronze struck at Adramyttion in Mysia under Caracalla, dated c. AD 198–206. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 3034 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Caracalla, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum. Legend: ΑV ΚΑΙ Μ ΑVΡ ΑΝΤΩΝЄΙΝΟϹ. Reverse: Emperor and Nike; to left, emperor left, wearing cuirass and boots, holding paludamentum and parazonium in right hand and patera in left; behind him Nike, holding palm-branch in left hand and crowning the emperor. Legend: ЄΠΙ ϹΤΡ Π ΑΙΛ ЄVΤVΧΟVϹ ΑΔΡΑΜΥΤΗΝΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 29.9 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 34–36.7 mm (from 2 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Adramyttion, also known as Adramyttium, was an ancient city situated in modern-day Turkey. This bronze civic issue was struck during the Roman Imperial Period under Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. A member of the Severan dynasty and elder son of Emperor Septimius Severus, Caracalla was proclaimed co-ruler by his father in 198 and ruled as Roman emperor until 217.
