Historical context
This coin was issued between AD 177 and 179 by the city of Adramyttion, located in Aeolis and Mysia. Commodus became Roman emperor in 177, originally serving as co-emperor alongside his father, Marcus Aurelius, until the latter's death in 180. Marcus Aurelius had ruled as emperor from 161, and both rulers appear on the coin, with Commodus depicted on the obverse and Marcus Aurelius shown on horseback on the reverse.
