Historical context
Lucius Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors after the death of Pertinax. He consolidated his rule across the Roman Empire through campaigns in the east, Gaul, and Africa, while also sharing imperial authority by proclaiming his elder son Caracalla as Augustus in 198. This civic issue was struck during his reign at Kame in Mysia, an ancient region located in northwestern Asia Minor along the south coast of the Sea of Marmara.
