Historical context

Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, initially acceding alongside his adoptive brother Lucius Verus as part of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. During his reign, the empire engaged in major military campaigns, including the Parthian War and the Marcomannic Wars. This bronze civic issue was struck between c. AD 161 and 165 at Germe, a city situated in Mysia, a region in northwest Anatolia along the south coast of the Sea of Marmara.
