Historical context

His reign established the principate, a system in which the emperor maintained autocratic control alongside nominal deference to the Senate, and initiated the Pax Romana. Augustus commanded the Roman military while receiving honours and titles from the Senate, including the title "augustus".

This silver denarius was struck under Augustus at the mint of Colonia Patricia. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "S P Q R CAESARI AVGVSTO", while the reverse depicts the war god Mars holding a vexillum and parazonium, accompanied by the legend "VOT P SVSC PRO SAL ET RED I O M SACR".
