Historical context

Augustus, the first Roman emperor and founder of the Roman Empire, ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Originally named Gaius Octavius, he adopted the name of Julius Caesar after his great-uncle's assassination in 44 BC. His reign inaugurated the Principate, alongside an imperial cult, and established an era of imperial peace across the Roman world. Augustus was granted several titles by the Senate, including pater patriae.

This aureus was struck under Augustus at the Lugdunum mint. The aureus served as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC to the early 4th century AD, valued during the Empire at twenty-five silver denarii. The obverse legend carries the title awarded to the emperor, reading "CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE". The reverse depicts Gaius and Lucius Caesar standing in togas beside shields and spears, flanked by a simpulum and a lituus, accompanied by the inscription "C L CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT".
