Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor, ruling from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. His reign established the principate and initiated the Pax Romana. During his rule, the Senate granted him honours and titles, including "augustus" and "pater patriae". This silver denarius was struck under his authority at the mint of Lugdunum.

The obverse features Augustus with the inscription CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, recording his title as father of the country. The reverse depicts Gaius and Lucius Caesar, togate, resting hands on shields and spears, flanked by a simpulum and a lituus, with the legend C L CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT.
