Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and also known as Octavian, was the founder of the Roman Empire and served as its first emperor from 27 BC until AD 14. Named as primary heir by his great-uncle Julius Caesar, he assumed Caesar's name after the dictator's assassination in 44 BC and fought for the loyalty of Caesar's legions before establishing the principate.

This silver denarius belongs to the standard Roman silver coinage system introduced around 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin features the bare head of Octavian alongside a reverse depiction of Venus holding a helmet and spear, accompanied by a column and an eight-rayed star shield, inscribed with the reverse legend "CAESAR DIVI F".
