Historical context

Augustus, originally known as Octavian, was the founder of the Roman Empire and ruled as its first emperor from 27 BC until AD 14. After the assassination of his great-uncle Julius Caesar in 44 BC, Octavian inherited his estate and assumed his name. He seized power and later consolidated autocratic rule, ushering in an era of imperial peace known as the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta.

This silver denarius was struck under the authority of Augustus, representing the standard Roman silver coin of the era. The coin features the bust of Pax accompanied by a cornucopia and an olive-spray on the obverse. The reverse portrays Octavian in military dress, raising his right hand and bearing a spear over his shoulder, accompanied by the inscription "CAESAR DIVI F".
