Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor and ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Following the collapse of the triumvirate formed with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, he established the principate in Rome. This system maintained nominal deference to the Senate while leaving Augustus with autocratic control over the Roman world, initiating an era known as the Pax Romana.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver piece belongs to the standard Roman silver coin series, the denarius, introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin features the bare head of Augustus on the obverse. The reverse displays the deity Mars, helmeted, cloaked, and holding a spear alongside a parazonium, standing atop a pedestal inscribed with "S P Q R V PR RE CAES" and accompanied by the legend "L MESCINIVS RVFVS".
