Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor and ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14, establishing the principate following the demise of the Second Triumvirate. Under his authority, this silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome by the moneyer identified in the obverse legend as "C ANTISTVS VETVS IIIVIR".

The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC during the Second Punic War until the third century AD. This issue features a diademed and draped bust of Venus on the obverse. The reverse displays sacrificial and priestly instruments—a simpulum, lituus, tripod, and patera—accompanied by the legend "COS IMP CAESAR AVGV XI", referencing Augustus's titles and eleventh consulship.
