Historical context

This bronze as was issued under Augustus, the founder of the Roman Empire and its first emperor, who ruled from 27 BC until AD 14. Following the collapse of the triumvirate and the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Augustus established the principate. This system of government maintained autocratic power while displaying nominal deference to the Senate and restoring the appearance of a free republic.

Struck at the mint of Rome, the coin reflects the political arrangements of the early principate. The obverse bears the bare head of the emperor alongside the legend CAESAR AVGVSTVS TRIBVNIC POTEST, referring to the tribunician powers granted to Augustus by the Senate.
