Historical context
Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the founder of the Roman Empire and ruled as its first emperor from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. His rule established the principate and initiated an era of peace termed the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta, alongside an imperial cult. He was granted the title augustus by the Roman Senate.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Augustus. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC. The coin bears the obverse legend "AVGVSTVS" and the reverse legend "L LENTVLVS FLAMEN MARTIALIS". The reverse scene depicts Augustus, laureate and togate, resting on a shield inscribed "CV" while placing a star on another figure holding a spear and a Victory on a globe.
