Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the founder of the Roman Empire and served as its first emperor from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. His rule initiated the Pax Romana and established the principate, a system in which the emperor maintained autocratic control while showing nominal deference to the Senate. He was granted the title augustus, meaning 'the revered', by the Senate.

This silver denarius was struck under Augustus at the mint of Caesaraugusta. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC during the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The piece features the obverse legend "CAESAR AVGVSTVS" accompanying his portrait, alongside a reverse displaying the inscription "S P Q R CL V" set within a shield.
