Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor and ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Following the demise of the triumvirate formed with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, he established the principate, a system in which he exercised autocratic authority alongside the Senate. During this era, Augustus assumed powers including the tribunate and, after the death of Lepidus, the position of pontifex maximus.

The obverse legend records Augustus's religious and political titles as "CAESAR AVGVST PONT MAX TRIBVNIC POT", reflecting his roles as pontifex maximus and holder of tribunician power. The reverse features the letters "S C" surrounded by the inscription "M SALVIVS OTHO IIIVIR A A A F F", indicating the mint magistrate responsible for its production.
