Historical context
After bronze coinage was reduced around 90 BC, the quadrans became the lowest-valued coin in production. Unlike other coinages of the Roman Empire, it rarely bore the image of the emperor. Instead, this issue depicts an altar on the obverse alongside the legend "SISENNA MESSALLA IIIVIR", while the reverse displays "S C" surrounded by "GALVS APRONIVS A A A F F".
