Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the founder of the Roman Empire and ruled as its first emperor from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. His reign established the principate and brought about the Pax Romana, an era of imperial peace across the Roman world. The Senate granted him the title of augustus, meaning 'the revered', while he maintained control as commander-in-chief of Rome's armies.

This silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War circa 211 BC. Struck under the authority of Augustus at an uncertain mint, the issue features a bare head of the emperor on the obverse accompanied by the legend "AVGVSTVS". The reverse depicts a hexastyle temple adorned with palmettes on top and a shield in its pediment, inscribed with the legend "IOVI OLVM|IOVI OLV".
