Historical context

Augustus was the founder of the Roman Empire and reigned as its first emperor from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. His rule established the principate, an era characterised by the Pax Romana and nominal deference to the Senate, following the defeat of Mark Antony and the demise of the triumvirate. This piece was produced under his authority at the mint of Pergamum.

The dupondius was a base-metal coin used during the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. Following the coinage reform of Augustus in about 23 BC, it was valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. The obverse bears the emperor's bare head alongside the title "AVGVSTVS", which had been granted to him by the Senate. The reverse displays the legend "CA" enclosed within a dotted circle and a wreath composed of rostra and laurel leaves.
