Historical context

Augustus, the founder of the Roman Empire and its first emperor from 27 BC until AD 14, established the principate, a government system demonstrating nominal deference to the Senate while retaining autocratic military authority. His reign commenced the Pax Romana, an era largely free of armed conflict throughout the Roman world, and initiated an imperial cult alongside broad territorial expansion.

Struck at the mint of Colonia Patricia, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin depicts the laureate head of Augustus on the obverse, while the reverse features a rectangular altar bearing the three-line inscription "FORT RED CAES AVG S P Q R".
