Historical context

His reign established the principate and initiated the era of imperial peace known as the Pax Romana. This silver denarius was struck under his authority at the mint of Colonia Patricia, bearing the obverse legend CAESAR AVGVSTVS.

The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC during the Second Punic War until the mid-third century AD. The reverse design features the legend MAR VLT alongside a round, domed tetrastyle temple containing Mars, who is depicted standing helmeted and cloaked while holding an aquila and a parazonium.
