Historical context

This bronze sestertius was struck at the mint of Rome under Claudius's authority. In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius functioned as a denomination equal to one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses, providing a useful medium for commerce. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Agrippina the Elder with the inscription "AGRIPPINA M F GERMANICI CAESARIS", while the reverse centres on the letters "S C" enclosed by the imperial legend "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P".
