Historical context
Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius during the imperial era. At the height of the Empire, one dupondius could purchase a loaf of bread or approximately half a litre of wine. The coin honours Claudius's mother, Antonia Minor, bearing her portrait alongside the obverse legend "ANTONIA AVGVSTA". The reverse features Claudius himself, depicted veiled and togate while holding a simpulum, accompanied by the inscription "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P S C".
