Historical context

Claudius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 until his death in AD 54 as the fourth emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Born in Lugdunum in Roman Gaul to Drusus the Elder and Antonia Minor, he was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of his nephew Caligula, being the last surviving adult male of his family.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze as was issued under the authority of Claudius. The obverse depicts the bare head of Germanicus accompanied by the legend "GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N". The reverse features the central letters "S C" encircled by the imperial titulature of the emperor, read as "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P".
