Historical context

Claudius governed the Roman Empire from AD 41 to AD 54 as the fourth emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, having been elevated by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Caligula. This brass sestertius, minted at Rome, honours his father Nero Claudius Drusus (Drusus the Elder), an esteemed general who launched major Roman campaigns into Germania between 12 and 9 BC. Drusus had died following a riding accident in 9 BC, and his memory was formally elevated during Claudius's reign.
