Historical context

Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Caligula, he proved to be an efficient administrator who restored imperial finances, built roads, aqueducts, and canals, and oversaw the conquest of Britain while striking coinage from the mint of Rome.

This bronze dupondius represented a denomination valued at two asses, or half of a sestertius and one-eighth of a denarius. Under the imperial monetary system, a dupondius could purchase roughly a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. The obverse presents the bare head of the emperor, accompanied by the legend "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P". The reverse depicts Ceres, veiled and draped upon an ornamented throne, holding grain stalks and a transverse torch, inscribed with "CERES AVGVSTA S C".
