Historical context

Claudius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 until his death in AD 54, representing the fourth ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Caligula, Claudius served as an administrator who expanded the imperial bureaucracy and helped restore the empire's finances. During his reign, the empire began its conquest of Britain, while Claudius frequently had to shore up his position against opposition.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze piece belongs to the dupondius denomination, an imperial coin valued at two asses, half a sestertius, or an eighth of a denarius. The obverse presents the bare head of the emperor alongside the legend "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P". The reverse depicts Constantia, helmeted and in military dress, holding a spear and raising her right hand, framed by the inscription "CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI S C".
