Historical context

Claudius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 until his death in AD 54 as the fourth ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Caligula, he was an administrator who restored the finances of the empire and oversaw public building projects. During his reign, the empire initiated the conquest of Britain, while Claudius frequently faced vulnerability from elements of the Roman nobility.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius represents a denomination valued during the Roman Republic at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius, which was useful for commerce. The reverse displays an oak-wreath containing the inscription "EX SC P P OB CIVES SERVATOS", while the obverse features the laureate portrait of the emperor with the imperial titles and name recorded in the legend "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P".
