Historical context

Declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard following the assassination of Caligula, he was an able administrator who restored the empire's finances, expanded the imperial bureaucracy, and oversaw the conquest of Britain. He governed from Rome, where he presided frequently at public trials and issued edicts daily.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze as was issued under the authority of Claudius. The obverse depicts his bare head facing left alongside imperial titles, bearing the legend "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P". The reverse features the figure of Libertas standing facing front, extending her right hand and holding a pileus, accompanied by the inscription "LIBERTAS AVGVSTA S C".
