Historical context

Claudius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 41 until his death in AD 54, becoming the fourth emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Following the assassination of Caligula, he was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard as the last surviving adult male of his family. Despite physical infirmities and initial ostracisation, Claudius proved an active administrator, reforming imperial finances, undertaking major public construction projects, and initiating the Roman conquest of Britain.

The obverse bears the emperor's portrait along with his official titulature, "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P". On the reverse, the legend "SPES AVGVSTA S C" accompanies a draped figure of Spes advancing left, holding a flower and raising her skirt.
