Historical context

Claudius reigned as Roman emperor from AD 41 until his death in AD 54, having been declared ruler by the Praetorian Guard after the assassination of his nephew Caligula. The oak-wreath motif alludes to the Civic Crown (corona civica), a military honour traditionally presented to Roman citizens who saved the lives of fellow citizens in battle.
